Growing up, I was fascinated with the natural world. Living in Colorado I had access to some of the most incredible sights and experiences that nature has to offer and my family explored them whenever we found the chance. In those times when camping or hiking in the mountains, valleys, and prairies wasn’t an option I found myself drawn to television programs like Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau as they were rebroadcast on public television. These shows were windows into a world that existed often just beyond my grasp, and they inspired a lifelong interest in the outdoors.
Later I would learn of Dick Proenneke and his 30 years spent living alone in the Alaskan wilderness. Hunting, fishing, building his cabin by hand, all of these things were a tremendous source of inspiration and awe. Proenneke was someone who met the world on his own terms and carved out a space in it. Self-taught, he took a lifetime of experience and put it to incredible use, and shared this journey through film and writing.
While none of us here at Can You Handlebar are about to head out into the wild on a 30 year quest for self-actualization, we all have an abiding love for the outdoors. Some of the crew hit a local Michigan waterway and we filmed a fun, quick little homage to those grainy and meditative glimpses into the wider world provided to us by heroes like Cousteau and Proenneke. We hope you enjoy it, and until you can make it out into nature to do some exploring of your own we've linked some of the inspirations for our approach below for your viewing pleasure.
And please, leave us some comments. We'd love to know some of your favorite outdoor spots to visit, and what inspires you to get out into nature.
