How Long Should Your Beard Be Before You Start Using Beard Products?

How Long Should your Beard Be to Start Using Beard Care Products
Have you ever wondered how long your beard should be before you start using beard products? This is probably in the top 5 most commonly asked questions when it comes to beard growing or beard maintenance. The short answer is that it’s never too early to start taking care of your beard.
Too Soon For Beard Care?
We’ll cut right to the chase: You should start using cleaning and conditioning products as soon as you decide to grow your beard. Even the small freshly sprouted hairs you can barely see are still accumulating excess oil and dirt from your skin, and need to be washed just like any other hair. Further, keeping the hair as well as the skin moisturized and conditioned is critically important. Dryness, itchiness and flakiness are the major roadblocks that keep many men from growing and keeping a beard. Starting a conditioning regimen early and maintaining it throughout the life of your beard can address all of these problem areas. So now that you know when to begin, how will you decide between using traditional liquid
beard oil or
beard dry oil?
Beard Dry Oil
For shorter or newer beards, I tend to suggest using beard dry oil due to the slight hold offered by the beeswax. When I say slight, I do mean slight. It is not a styling product or anything you would use for a freestyle beard design, but it is enough to catch fly-away hairs and put them back into place. Our beard dry oil is great when used in conjunction with combing or brushing to train your beard hairs to lay the way you want them to. As a low-temperature solid, you don’t run the risk of over-pouring, so it can be a little more intuitive for those new to beard conditioning. And of course it has all the same conditioning properties and scents you will find in our traditional beard oil.
Beard Oil
While I often recommend beard dry oil for new beards, there’s no reason not to use beard oil if you find yourself so inclined. It can absorb a bit faster and is going to keep your skin and beard healthy, regardless of the length. Just be sure to start with a small amount so as not to overdo it. While it won’t have the slight hold the dry oil does, when it comes to nourishing your beard, you really can’t go wrong.
Which Will You Choose?
Taking care of your beard should start on day one, that includes washing and conditioning the hairs and keeping the skin moisturized. Will you go for the slight hold our beard dry oil offers and work on training your hairs as they start to grow? Or will you opt for the more traditional liquid beard oils and let the hairs grow in their natural patterns? You won’t be disappointed with either choice, and you will be putting your beard in the best possible condition to promote healthy growth.

Hi Hiera,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question! We do not carry anything like a beard growth rub. In fact, we have not seen any scientific data showing there is a product like that. Everyone’s beard growth is largely determined by your genetics. Time and patience are the best ways to know what your beard will do. Now is a good time to let it grow as most people are stuck at home anyway. We wrote an article addressing the topic of beard products making your beard grow which you can read here (https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/beard-care/will-canyouhandlebar-products-make-your-beard-grow?pos=1&_sid=1fd966e26&ss=r).
Let me know if I can help with anything else. Be well.

I skimped for the first three months of my beard growth. I was using head shampoo and nothing else. Then I got a brand of beard shampoo and beard oil from Walmart and used that for about a month. In those 4 months, I had itchy skin, broken dead brittle beard hairs. I also formed scaly itchy skin all in my chin area over that month. Every two weeks of that 4 months I had to have dead broken ends trimmed from my beard.
At the end of the 4th month, I got and started using Canyouhandlebar beard shampoo, beard and face lotion, Wisdom and Initiative beard oil and dry oil beard balm. After 4 days of use, the itchy scaly skin went away. I have been using Canyouhandlebar beard care products for an 9 additional months. Every day I shampoo, beard and face lotion, beard oil and dry oil beard balm. Since I started doing that, no more itchy dry brittle hairs. No more trimming off broken dead ends. Nothing but healthy beard hairs.
Hopefully my 13 month beard journey where after month 4 I basically put the beard on autopilot and didn’t have to itch or scratch my face or trim dead ends gives an insight into what premium oils can do .

Hi Carlo,
Thanks for your input! Our beard balms do have coconut oil in them. Coconut oil is excellent for encouraging healthy skin and hair. Sadly, it’s not going to make hair grow magically though.

Hey Rohit,
You could try coconut oil, I couldn’t get much growth either then I started using coconut oil. I’m three weeks in now and my beard is growing in well. I’m using Dingo Dan’s Coconut Island Beard oil but there are loads out there. I find having a nice warm bath, steam, then towel dry and apply the oil. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi Rohit,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for the comment. So beard oil is a leave-in conditioner that is designed to help keep your skin and beard conditioned. It is not a product that is going to make you grow a beard. In fact, there are not any products that can make you grow a beard. Your beard-growing capabilities are largely determined by your genetics. That and time are really the main factors.

Hey Leigh,
Tim here. Oh no! Really sorry to hear about that bad experience with the barber. The good news is it will grow back but that is a bummer to be back 9 weeks. Personally, I only clean up/trim about twice a year. It’s hard to stay that patient but it’s worth it, especially for the first year of growth. Hope you can hang in there and recover from the setback. Stay bearded!

Hey Adam,
Thanks for checking out the blog and great question!
At 19, you are still pretty young and it could take some time to grow that beard. The other factor to consider is your genes. Beard growth (how much you grow, the shape, etc.) really boils down to your genes.
As we discuss in a different article (https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/beard-care/will-canyouhandlebar-products-make-your-beard-grow), our products are not going to magically make you grow a beard. Rather, they make sure that your skin and the beard that you do grow are as healthy and conditioned as they can be.
My recommendation would be to stay patient and let those hairs grow. Give it time and see if it starts to fill in. If it doesn’t, that may just mean those are the genes you’ve inherited.
Hope that helps!

Hey Ibrahim,
Tim here. Thanks so much for checking out our blog!
That is a great question. The short answer is, yes, you still want to use a beard oil or balm as well as a beard shampoo/wash. Though the hair on your hair is oily, it’s not really going to help when it comes to keep your face and beard clean and conditioned. The role of beard oil or balm is to act as a leave-in conditioner specifically for your face and beard. When you wash your face and beard, the natural sebum and oils get stripped and using a beard oil helps replenish them. With a shorter beard, you won’t need to use very much product but I’d still recommend using a beard oil or balm in addition to the beard conditioner.
Hope that helps!

I’m 18 years old and i have naturally oily hair. That’s why i use shampoo every day and if I go 2 days without shampoo then my hair will look greasy. Because my head produces so much sebum, do i still need to use beard oil?My longest beard has been 1.5 inches and i did not have beard ruff. I did use beard conditioner because it kept it soft.

Hey Norman,
Tim here. Great question! The answer to that is pretty subjective. If you have a goal in mind for how long you want your beard to be or how long you want to grow it out, let that determine when to visit a barber. Every guy is different when it comes to trimming. Some of us here trim maybe a few times a year while others have never trimmed. The main advice I’d give on trimming is to always use scissors not electric clippers and always start small.
Hope that helps!

It is never to early or too late to take care of your hair and skin. As a former hair care professional I can confidently say most men neglect a good hair and skin care regime. Probably because we identify with our fathers who were soap and water men, and mom was the one with “special” soap and moisturizers, usually seen lathering themselves in cold cream, which isn’t very “manly.” However lets remember early bearded men would apply scented olive oil to their skin and beards. Gladiators would routinely have special oils massaged into their skin in preparation for their battles and there isn’t anything more manly than fighting to the death.
