The decision to grow a handlebar moustache can be made in a day; however, the work required to actually grow a handlebar to full maturity requires about three months (aka 90 days, 12 weeks, or a quarter of a year--whichever seems the shortest to you). If you know this you are ahead of the game and have the opportunity to prepare your mind and your face. Here are the phases and what you need to know for each.
This phase is the easy one. You may be a lucky would-be handlebar moustache wax wearer and already have some sort of goatee, a moustache or a full beard and moustache combo. If that is the case, skip to Phase Two. If you are converting your Movember growth to a manly handlebar, you have already gone through this and come out the other side with some growth. Here are some tips for this. Tip: 1. err on the side of not shaving hairs you may need later. 2. Use a natural coarse bristled brush to massage the skin and keep the skin on your lip healthy and free of dead skin and hairs that have bailed. 3. Start using your moustache wax to train the hairs to the sides and condition the hair underneath.
This is when you will be tempted to trim at the lip line because it is itchy and starts to creep into your mouth. DON'T. You need these hairs later. The itchy phase is where most guys bail. Hang tight because this phase only lasts a couple weeks before the hairs are long enough to stay put when you comb them to the sides. Tips: 1. Use wax every day at this point. Use the least necessary to maintain the hold and protect your skin. 2. Use positive affirmations like "nothing worthwhile happens overnight" and then suck it up and stick it out to Phase Three.
This is the big pay off. After around six to eight weeks you will have an adolescent handlebar moustache. The middle won't have grown all the way to the ends yet, but it will look like a fully fledged handlebar from a couple feet away. Buy the time you hit the three month mark--you are there! Congratulations! Tips: 1. Focus most of you wax in the tips since your nose is breathing out nearly 98 degrees and will soften the wax anyway. Since you are three months in, all of your hairs are growing alongside one another and so, if you get the tips waxed, the middle will largely take care of itself. Tips: 1. Focus on the tips. 2. Twist the tips gently toward your face not "out" since your head is sort of a sphere and you want the tips to hug your face, not point out like bull horns. 3. Help someone else by becoming a handlebar moustache mentor!

Hey Steve,
I just found this site like a 2-3 months ago because I decided to start growing a mustache first off because my cousin had a kid so I wasn’t going to shave until I first met him. Well I still haven’t gotten the chance to meet him yet, but I decided to switch to a baseball mustache. So possibly keep it until my team (the White Sox) are eliminated from postseason contention. If they win 2 consecutive World Series then it stays for the the next few years.

Hi Jeff,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question about growing out that handlebar. I definitely understand how those hairs above your upper lip can get really annoying. Getting one of them stuck between your teeth when flossing and having it rip out of your lip is not a fun experience!
You certainly could grow a handlebar while trimming but it is not going to be a full handlebar and you’ll really miss the length when it comes to styling. We recommend training the moustache rather than trimming. A solid moustache comb like the Kent 81 T and some moustache wax will go a long way for training the whiskers to lay the way you want them to (away from your mouth). It takes time and patience but if you stick with it you can enjoy a nice, full handlebar and not be eating your moustache.
Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hey there, I’ve been growing out my beard and moustache for a couple of months now, but until a few weeks ago I always trimmed the moustache hairs just above my upper lip because they annoy me I find myself “chewing” on them absentmindedly. Is it possible to grow a nice handlebar while still trimming those hairs north of the lips, or are all hairs necessary to get the ideal handlebar look? Also, if I let them grow, any tips on keeping them away from my lips? They aren’t quite long enough to fully wax over to the sides.

I found your advice gave me the confidence to attempt a handlebar when first researching back in February this year. I started on February 10th and I am nearly there ( I’ve kept it simple, and set my end date at 10th May)
I am proud to say, I have stuck with your No 1 nugget of advice, “don’t trim”
I have never had a moustache and being the age I am, it is quite a statement ( no, I’m well past “middle age”) and it is great to try something that has a bit of fun and discipline involved without too much effort
Great advice, clear and unambiguous, I’ve really enjoyed the journey ( ha ha)

Hey Tim!
I just found your blog and love the advice. Lot of websites are vague when it comes to the handlebar. Yours is really specific. Thanks for that.
I’m in about week 6 now… It finally looks like starting to look like a serious stache. The inner hairs not fully grown yet so the stache looks a little transparent right above my lip so when I smile it becomes a gray fuzz. But you know what? I don’t care. Good things take time. I knew this would be a 3-5-months-at-least project and I’ve enjoyed seeing it grow.
Been training it with wax, beard oil and 5 min every day comb and a twice-a-week beard shampoo bath. I’ve also applied some minoxidil to stimulate blood flow but I think the comb does the same in a natural way. Caring for it has really made a difference in the growth process.
Thanks for the awesome tips! Take care. Greetings from Costa Rica.
Ariel.

Hi Nickita,
Tim here. Thanks so much for checking out the blog. I understand you are concerned about the growth of your moustache. I would highly recommend staying patient and just letting it grow. We have not seen any scientific data showing that shaving the moustache hairs will actually speed up the growth process. One thing about growing a moustache that you will learn is that it always takes patience. Some find it helpful to give themselves a goal or set a concrete date, say 6 month, 9 months, or even a year, and commit to growing till then.
Hope that help!

Hello. I am one of your younger readers and I haven’t cut my mustache at all yet. Since they are still growing slowly should I wait patiently as they grow at the normal rate or should I use a razor for the first time on my mustache to speed up the growth process? Thanks

Hi John,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question. It is fairly common to have one side of your moustache be thicker than the other and sometimes the hairs can even grow at slightly different rates. It should definitely still be possible to train and style your moustache as a handlebar. The main tools I recommend are a good moustache comb (I love the Kent 81T) and some moustache wax. Our Primary is a great one to start with. Stay patient, let the hairs grow and know that it takes a lot of practice to get the curls to behave.
We have an article on fixing an uneven moustache that might be helpful as well.
Thanks again for checking out the blog and let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hey Matt,
Tim here. Thanks so much for checking out the blog! Great question. I would highly recommend going with option A. When it comes to growing out your handlebar moustache, you want to be really patient and not trim. Trimming, as you know, is tricky and rarely turns out how you hope it does. You’ll want the growth of those inner hairs in the long run.
Stay patient and keep the end goal in mind. Keep that moustache clean and train it with combing and waxing.
Hope that helps!

Hey, I’ve got a mini-handlebar going after a few months (I’m half Chinese, half Australian – so it takes some time), but am at a loss as to if I:
A) stuck to the program, never trim it, and grow the inner hair out and wax them all into line, or;
B) trim the hair just under my lip, chevron style, and keep the ends long and curl them up.
Because I’m not a super hairy bloke, I don’t want to make a mistake. The horrible thing is that, if I trim and it goes horribly wrong – all of the hard work and my perseverance goes out the window!

Hey Steve,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog. Great question!
Your moustache hairs are going to grow from the middle out and so those ones on the end by the edge of your mouth are going to take the longest to grow out. Please resist the temptation to trim them. You’ll want them later on as your moustache grows. Keep being patient, using the beard balm, and start combing the moustache or even using a little wax as it grows us. Eventually it will grow and lay more evenly for you. I know it isn’t what you want to hear, but patience and time really are the best ways to get that full moustache.

This site looks awesome – from the 5 mins I have spent scanning. I have 6 weeks growth and coming along well. Seem to be at the ‘awkward teenage stage" (the stache, not me – I’m 50-ish) where the hairs are long enough to be itchy but not quite long enough to see the handlebars yet. Encouraging to see its only a few more weeks away. No barbers in the city where I live able to give coherent advice on awesome Staches so getting all my info online. Also good to see encouragement to be a moustache mentor, that I will be doing too. Currently training the hairs into the right direction instead of curling up my nose.
