There is a lot of talk currently about the all-natural moustache look. It’s a great compromise between the heavily manicured look of a handlebar and the rough “do-nothing” approach. That said, many do not realize the amount of time and training that is needed to accomplish the look, and knowing how to comb your moustache is an integral part of the training. The truth is your moustache has a natural growth pattern and without combing and training it can leave you looking like a bit of a ruffian. Combing daily will help immensely. Keep reading for our tips on how to comb your moustache.
You may be tempted to save money by using a regular hairbrush or by snagging the cheapest moustache comb you can find online. I highly recommend not doing either of these, a little bit of consideration and investment will pay off tremendously. If you’re serious about growing and caring for your moustache, you’ll want a dedicated comb for your moustache. From my five years of experience, you can’t beat the Kent 81 T.
When combing your moustache there are typically two goals: 1. Training your moustache to lay the way you want and 2. Keeping those fly-away whiskers out of your nose and mouth. To accomplish both, here is a quick guide as to how to properly comb your moustache:
After combing with the above method you’ll be ready to style your moustache with moustache wax or go enjoy your day. Even if you choose not to wax, repeated and regular combing will allow you to maintain some control over your natural growth pattern as you train the hairs to lay correctly. As always, if you feel we missed anything or you have any questions about combing your moustache, leave us a comment below.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for checking out the blog. That’s a great question! As a general rule of thumb, using a blow dryer on the lowest heat setting and making sure you don’t have it directly on the moustache for a long period of time, should be okay. As long as you stick with your care routine and keep the moustache clean and hydrated, using a blow dryer should be fine. Of course, if you notice your hair feeling brittle and dry, stop using the blow dryer.
We touch on using a blow dryer to train your moustache in this article as well: https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/moustache-care/moustache-maintenance-straightening-and-training
Be well!

Hi Tim,
I’ve seen video tutorials from guys who use a blow dryer to help train their moustache.
I’d have thought this would make the hairs more brittle.
What are your thoughts on this?
Best regards
Chris

Hi Randy,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog! Happy to hear you have been able to hold off on trimming so far. Are you combing or waxing your moustache as well? That will go a long way in the training process. Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers!

I’ve been growing my mustache out for a year. I insist on not trimming any hairs figuring that they’ll eventually be trained. So far so good.

Hey James,
Thanks for checking out the blog!
For best growth, you’ll want to just let it grow. I know sometimes I get those stray whiskers that curl up into my nose and tickle so much. Rather than cutting them, I use a comb and some wax to train the whiskers to lay how I want them to. Trimming them will result in uneven growth and slower overall growth.
Hope that helps!

Hey Pierino!
Tim here. Great question. What type of comb are you using? And is your moustache clean and dry when you comb?
One or two here or there is normal but if you are seeing one or two every time you comb something is amiss. I’d say I lose maybe 3-4 a month and most of those happen when apply moustache wax that isn’t warmed up quite enough.
We recommend combing when your moustache is clean and dry. If you comb with wax in that can lead to hair loss.
Cheers,
Tim

How many moustache hairs should you loose in a day, I comb regularly and most times I do this the odd hair or two comes out. I am scared my moustache is going to go thin and sparse. Any help in keeping a thick moustache. Cheers!!
