At The Beard Mentor we have several articles on waxing your moustache; from basic training and styling tips to champion-winning methods, and we hope you’ve found those informative (have a look at some of our most popular ones below). That said, we found we were lacking in the “DON’T DO THAT!” category. So here’s a few mistakes that myself and the majority of beginners have made and have had to learn the hard way when waxing a moustache.
Learning to wax your moustache takes time, patience, and practice. Don’t get down on yourself if it doesn’t come out perfectly symmetrical, you will get better. Even the world champions of the full-beard with styled-moustache categories had to practice their waxing, and look at them now.
(Update June 2018) Our new video “How to Use Moustache Wax” shows you how to warm and apply moustache wax. You can view the video below or enjoy the same 'how to' guide in a blog post format with easily-followed GIFs and some additional information. Feel free to read along here.

Hi Josh,
Tim here. Thanks for stopping by the site and checking on the Primary wax. We are working hard to make more and hope to have it available in the next few weeks. We had hoped to have it available by now but hit some snags with delayed shipments in some of the raw materials needed to make more. I’ve added you to my list of folks to notify when we have it back in stock and will get in touch when we have it available again. Thanks for your support and patience! Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Take care,
Tim

Hello. I am trying to purchase Primary, but it is sold out everywhere (except a few sites that are charging twice as much as other locations). What is happening? Is this product discontinued? If not, when do you expect it to be available again?
Thanks,
Josh

Hi Dominic,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question concerning those waxes setting for you. I’m not sure if you are using our waxes or other ones, but if you are using ours, you need to make sure you warm the wax and apply properly. If you have done that, the final step is to actually set the wax by getting some cool air on it. I typically use my wife’s hair dryer on the cool setting and hit the stache with it for 30-60 seconds. You can check out our article on setting wax here:
https://www.canyouhandlebar.com/blogs/moustache-care/48021893-how-to-set-your-moustache-wax-up-for-success?pos=1&_sid=e80fafa66&ss=r (Please copy and paste as I can’t create a clickable link in the blog comments).
That should help you see much better success! A final tip would be to make sure you start with a clean, dry moustache that doesn’t have any beard oil or balm in it. The balm or oil will actually repel the wax and keep it from having the hold you are looking for. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Take care,
Tim

Hi Aron,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog. I’m glad to hear your whiskers are starting to be a bit more manageable.
Great question! For best results, I recommend only applying moustache wax to a clean, dry (not oiled) moustache. Your whiskers and skin will absorb some of the oil but not all of it and it will still repel the wax so the wax won’t be able to have as solid of a hold. I think you can still oil daily, just at the end of the day after washing the wax out. That way your whiskers can stay hydrated and get a break from the wax. Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Take care,
Tim

Hi James,
Tim from Can You Handlebar here. Thanks for checking out the blog. I don’t have a way to notify people when I reply so I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss my response. Please see below.
“I’m happy to hear you are making the most of the shelter-in-place by letting that moustache grow. Those whiskers definitely have a mind of their own and can be very stubborn. How long have you been using the wax? Do you feel like you are using a good amount to help train? Do you have a solid moustache comb as well?
Combing the hair daily in addition to wax will help reinforce the training the wax is doing. I’d make sure to do both of those things daily for sure. The other factor is honestly just time. The longer those whiskers grow while being trained, the better they will behave. I would not give up on it. Stay patient and keep training and letting it grow.
Take care,
Tim

It’s hard for me to grow facial hair and with our shelter-in-place I’m finally able to let it go. I have a pretty good length on my mustache, hairs just over top lip, but hairs will not stay down. Even with wax applied my mustache hairs stick up or wild. I have thin, straight facial hair. Any tips for me? Should I give up on a thick mustache and keep it thin?

Hi Rich,
Tim here. Thanks for checking out the blog and for your question. Typically beading happens when the wax has not been warmed properly or if it is applied to thick in an area. The best ways to avoid this would be to always make sure you warm that wax real well before applying it and then make sure you distribute the wax evenly across your moustache. I use a Kent 81T comb to spread it out. One other tip would be to make sure you let the wax set after you have applied it. A bit of cool air will do the trick. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sometimes I’m out on the fire ground in cooler weather. Is there a way to keep it from beading when working outside in these conditions?

Just wanted to say I love the mustache waxes from Canyouhandlebar. I use the hair dryer method to warm the wax. The Kent comb comes in handy to spread the wax.
So primary wax application. Then comb, shape and a little more primary wax. Wait about 2-5 minutes.
Then comb again and apply the pliable secondary wax. Then shape and apply small amounts of secondary wax.
All day hold.

Hey Paul,
Thanks for reading! Great question.
Yes, that is correct, you do not want to put beard balm or oil on the moustache prior to waxing. The oils will counteract/repel the wax so that it is not going to have the hold that you want. We recommend dewaxing the stache about once a week and getting some balm or oil on it so it stays hydrated and healthy. Otherwise, be sure to apply the beard balm/oil just to the beard when you plan to wax the stache.

So, counter to other advice I’ve received, one should not apply beard balm, since it contains carrier oils prior to waxing? My hair can be particularly unruly, but I wouldn’t want to counteract the hold of the wax!
