Whether you’ve been grooming your beard for a week or a decade, it can often be hard to know just how much product (Beard Oil, Beard Dry Oil (beard balm) or Moustache Wax) to use. Here are some helpful tips:
It’s a good idea to start small as a little can go a long way. It is also easier to add more wax or oil rather than trying to figure out what to do with too much.
Using our Can You Handlebar Beard Oil Brush™ will help insure that the product is evenly distributed. It’s designed to fit specifically into the Beard Dry Oil tin but also works great with our traditional liquid oils.
This might sound silly but it’s actually quite helpful. Try out different amounts, jot down the results for reference, even take a photo to refer to later . Over time, applying the correct amount of beard oil or moustache wax will become second nature.
Practically speaking here are some tips for how much of each product to use:
Scoop out a small amount (about the size of two grains of rice). Remember you can always apply more if needed. Also keep in mind it can be helpful to use the Primary and Secondary waxes together (Primary on the middle whiskers and Secondary for the outside/curls), especially with the first few applications.
Again, using our Can You Handlebar Beard Oil Brush™ is best. Place the brush in the tin and do a quarter turn of the brush in the tin). If using your hands scoop out an amount roughly the size of a pea or two peas.
For a normal size beard use the dropper to put a dime to nickel-sized amount in your palm, or in the center bristles of the Can You Handlebar Beard Oil Brush™.
Oil balance is a vital element to maintaining healthy hair, and beard oil is a vital part of growing and fostering a healthy beard, but it is possible to apply too much. Beard hair will soak up as much oil as it can to soften and shine, and a small amount of oil worked into the skin will reduce dryness, itchiness and flaking.
Just be careful not to overdo it, as the pores of the skin can become clogged resulting in possible irritation. Trapped oil can also plug hair follicles, leaving the hair trapped under the skin. This can lead to an infected hair follicle or even the atrophy of the follicle itself over time. Over-saturated beard hair can also become stringy and pliable. Over time, this can in turn result in weaker, thinner hair prone to damage.
Thankfully, it’s easy to tell if you’ve overused product. Your facial hair will look and feel damp and may appear clumped together in spots. You’ll also notice more of the product staying on your hands or brush, as the hair and skin have absorbed all they can, leaving the excess behind. Simply wipe some of the excess away with a (not damp) washcloth, then give your beard a good brushing or combing to ensure that the product is evenly distributed.
