How to Maintain Your Beard by Brushing or Combing Your Beard

Quick Tips: After washing and oiling your beard use a high quality brush or comb (Like one of our Wooden Combs) to brush or comb your beard. Then go be your awesome self and enjoy the “Nice beard!” compliments.

So far we’ve looked at How to Maintain Your Beard--Part One: Washing, then we talked about How to Maintain Your Beard--Part Two: Oiling, and now we will have a look at how to brush or comb your beard.

Why do you need to brush or comb your beard?

Without brushing or combing your beard it won’t be long before your beard is a shambled mess of tangles, knots, and maybe even some critters. Haha, okay, maybe not the critters part. Brushing and combing can, however, help with overall beard health by minimizing tangles which can lead to an unhealthy beard.

Brushing stimulates the natural oils in your whiskers, removes loose hairs, and encourages good healthy beard growth.

What brush or comb should I use?

For starters, pick a brush or comb that you love. We carry three different ones that are all amazing. I (Tim) personally prefer the Diamond Head Brush by Ergo. It doesn’t hurt to have both a brush and comb to test out. Depending on the length or style of your beard one may suit you better than the other.

How do I brush or comb my beard?

After you’ve washed your beard and then oiled it you’re ready to brush or comb it. Here’s how:

  1. You’ll want to start the end of your beard.
  2. You want to use light short passes. This allows you to work out any snags or tangles.
  3. Work your way from the bottom of the beard to the top this way and then you can go back through with longer passes. Brushing your beard this way keeps in the healthy hairs you don’t want to lose and also prevents tangles that can lead to split ends or other damage.

This video of Andy is a nice summary of the four steps above.

We would caution not to overdo it. Find what works best for you and do that once a day. Over brushing your beard can actually do more damage than good.

Combined with How To Maintain Your Beard: Part One--Washing and How To Maintain Your Beard: Part Two--Oiling, you should be well on your way to confidently maintain your beard! We will explore the topic of brushing vs. combing your beard in future blog posts so stay tuned!
